Gloria Laux is the face behind Gananoque Bag Company, the local artisan who upcycles sailcloth into one of a kind items, such as bags, pillows, aprons, wine bottle bags, coasters, and toiletry bags. Her work will be featured in our storefront starting June 22.
So Glo, how long have you been living in Gananoque? Where did you move from and why?
From Toronto in August 2015, because of the river and to get out of the big smoke. Plus it’s between Toronto and Ottawa where our families are.
I know you are a Pilates instructor too...can you tell us a bit about that?
Sure. I’ve been teaching Pilates since 2000 and I’m teaching at Gan Fitness and at the Thousand Islands Tower on Hill Island. Plus I teach the Melt Method which helps to get out and stay out of pain.
How did you learn to sew?
My mother. She worked out of the basement when we were kids, then worked with a partner, then on her own and I joined her in her company. Fun Fact: We sewed a banner from squares covered in well wishes for the Canadian Olympic team in 2014.
All your products are made from up-cycled or renewed materials. Do you have any thoughts on Eco-fashion to share?
There is so much in the world right now that we don’t need to buy new. With a little creativity we can make old things better or new again.
Do you do custom work? How can people get in touch with you?
Yes! The best way to make a custom order or get in touch with me about the bags on my Facebook page is to message me directly on Facebook.
