Dead On Collective- A&C Local Digs

Local Digs is a weekly coverage of maker spaces and art centers right here in Eastern Ontario. If you are interested in being featured, please say

As a rather recent transplant to the Gananoque area, one of the best parts of living in a new place is finding new (to me) spaces and places for the creative mind.

One of the first I've come across (thanks in large part to Calvin) is Dead On Collective. Here are some shots from the opening night in 2017 featuring artists like Jordy Renee, Erin Smith, Whit Montgomery, Francois Heroux (DJ Premium Plus), Eric “ESTR” Williams, Jenny Moring. (Big thanks to Dead On for passing on the show's artists).

Dead On is an Emerging Artist Collective. For those who don't know about the differences between Emerging Artist, Mid-Career, and Established Artists, there is a great piece here from Bmore Art that thoroughly explains it. In short,

An emerging artist is someone who’s in the early stage of their career, someone who’s caught the eye of an art critic and/or gallery, but hasn’t yet established a solid reputation as an artist amongst art critics, art buyers, and art galleries.

Dead On positions themselves as the most progressive outlet of artistic expression in the Kingston area, which is artspeak for being able to use non-traditional mediums like urban illustration (read: graffiti) and entertains a more fluid approach to exhibitions and community art shows.

Spring seems to be when the studio artists at Dead On get making art, so there are no upcoming shows to speak of. We will check in with them over the next few months to see if we can pass on any cool opportunities for collaboration.

Just like Dead On Collective, Arts & Craft Collective is geared towards the Emerging Artist...or perhaps even those just stepping into the Art World through creativity workshops (think our Brushes & Brews) or just starting to explore the underground world of indie films and music. So we feel pretty excited that we have such a cool group to look to as we get our feet wet in the eastern Ontario art scene.

The thing we like most: the post-punk vibe

The thing we are most excited about: balancing art exhibition with art creation
